USS George H.W. Bush

Good morning Scouting enthusiasts!

We have received an offer to attend the program at the George Bush Library to hear a presentation from the Crew of the Aircraft carrier CVN-77 – the USS George H.W. Bush. After our trip to the USS Lexington it might be interesting to see and hear about our new aircraft carriers and what they do for our military.

If anyone is interested in attending, either individually or as a group please let me know and I will see about making arrangements. The detailed info can be found in the email below.

Your in scouting,

Paul Marvin

USS Lexington – Scout Master Comments

Good morning scouting enthusiasts! What a great trip we had to the USS Lexington! For those of you that haven’t been before, we got to sleep on the ship in the berths that the enlisted sailors slept in. We got to tour the boat and see what life would have been like on the carrier. Plus we learned quite a bit about the history of the ship in World War II and the trials the US fleet went through with the Japanese kamikaze bombers.

In addition, the flight deck was covered with an assortment of planes and jets used by the Navy for the past 80 years or so.

The ship put on a program that explained the history of several flags on the ship and they had a great patriotic theme to everything they did.

The scouts also saw a movie in the iMax like theater, rode in a flight simulator, participated in a ghost stories session and the older scouts got to stand for the Fire watch to help guard the ship throughout the night. I understand they were really looking for ghosts but unfortunately, they didn’t come across any even though they looked pretty hard for them… :)

In addition to all of that, they had a push up contest in which Jake Blaszak won the older boys competition… way to go Jake!

I suggest that the next time we go to see the USS Lexington, which will probably be in the next 3 to 4 years, that we invite the Cub Scouts from Pack 383 to go along with us. I think they would really get a kick out of sleeping on the ship and participating in the activities they offer.

Quintana Beach – Scout Master Comments

Good morning scouting enthusiasts!  Here are some thoughts on our trip this past weekend to Quintana Beach.

First of all, it was great seeing all of our scouts getting involved and working hard to stretch trees out on large section of the beach to help protect it from erosion.  We had more trees this year than we have ever had since I have been attending this camp out and we ran out of time before we ran out of trees for a change.  The scouts did a great job jumping in and helping out dragging, moving, staking and tieing down trees to help protect that section of beach from erosion.

They also did a great job with their campfire program.

One item on which we need to improve is the attention the younger scouts get from the older scouts in helping them to advance.  We need to look closely at what we do during our camp outs and during our scout meetings and we should remember that the way  you earn leadership and earn service time is by giving back to the scouts.  One of the primary ways we do this is by helping our younger scouts get to first class.

We were generally lacking in the attention our older scouts paid to our younger scouts and the lack of advancement during this camp out. I have to give kudos to Travis Phillips, our troop guide for the effort he put into helping the younger scouts but the older scouts really needed to step it up a bit.  This will be a topic of conversation tonight at our PLC.

Overall the camp out went rather well and I believe the Scouts enjoyed themselves. Other than the hawk-size mosquitoes and dampness we always have, the trip went off without a hitch! I believe we will be regulars again at the annual Quintana Beach Christmas tree stake down.

Yours in Scouting,

Paul Marvin

Day 6

Scout Quotes Day 6

What a week!  THis is our last day and it was a doozie!  It was the hotest day so far and we had lots of kids getting over heated. Our boys are all okay butwe had afew who we had to sit dow and get to cool down. The staff was a little light to handle the last day rush to finish up merit badges but we got most of ours finished up.  Our Scouts are tired and ready to come home. I think we Dad’s are about ready as well!

Last night we had one scout roll out of his cot, and out of his tent on to the ground. He isn’t hurt but it was kind of funny this morning talking about it. I won’t mention who it was to keep from embarrasing him but he was laughing about it with us when he told us what happened this morning.

All our scouts have done really well this week and you will all be glad to hear that our boys have been very well behaved an well mannered at camp. I wont menion the behavior of other scouts but our boys were usually the ones doing the cleaning and the straighteneing after the meals.  We shared a bathroom with several other troops but it was our Scouts who kept it clean and well supplied.  Our scouts were the ones getting to bed on time and quieting down after lights out and not keeping other troops up late at night.

We have an exceptional group of Scouts and you should all be proud of how well they have done here at camp.

Since it is our last night and the boys really enjoyed sending goofy quotes, they wanted to send a few more. So her ethey are:

Nick A:” Mom, guess what I found!  Everything but my shirt.  See you tomorrow!

Garret: “Hi Mom, I miss you very much. I have several surprises for you.  The first is I stink!  The second is I went on the blob and Jack shot me 30 feet in the air!  Your post card should be arriving soon. I went fishing and the fish were not biting (they must be very smart). we are goign tohave fireworks here tonight. I didnt get many pictures, I didnt take many showers but I am taking one tonight! I hoep I see you soon! Oh, andby the way, everything is paked in my foot locker. It rained and I think i lost a pair of underwear.  And the flies like to bite me! Oh, and I fell off o my cot last  night and then I fell out of my tent! and tell the dogs i said hi and tell leo I’m back!”

Jake B: “THis week I experienced Hale and by the way, I love you mom (and Dad, and Zach)! I hit 20 out of 25 in Shotgun and me and Nathan and Thomas were the only ones who hit a lay with the black powder shotgun”

Zack R: “I zipp lined 100 yards today, walked 40 feet in the air, I swung upsidee down from a cable called the screamer, and I climbed a tekephone pole. See you tomorrow Mom”

Patrick: “I cant wait to see you tomorrow. I rode a horse today with Dad and overall for my first summer camout, this was a 8!”

Jack: “I love you and I cant wait to be home to talk about my new reptile I am going to take care of!”

Eric S: ” Hey Mom, hey Dad, I had to do a conservation project. I am vry tired and ready to come home. See you tomorrow!   Oh, by the way, I cant wait to take my first shower of the week tomorrow at home! (just kidding)”

Esteban: “I finished Shotgun, first aid, pottery and swimming merit badges. I got my totem chip and my firemn chit. Once I come home I am ready to take my first shower. Not really, I showerd 4 times. I probably walkd 5 or 6 miles up a down hills all day long! I raelly miss everyone at hme. I cant wait to comehome tomorrow. Ill be home pretty soon. there were a lot of mosquitos! I love eveyone at home and I cant wait to see everyone!”

Nick R: ” Coming home tomorrow, SOS! I had fun at camp. I really liked my classes and I will see you tomorrow! I love you mom!”

Madison: “I just took my first shower today! I finished all the merti badges I took. Love you Mom!”

Travis: “Hi Mom Hi Dad, hello big sister. We played 3 hours of card games today and I finished horesemanship this week.”

Cread: “Today I climber the tower!  and I repeled down it! I threw tomahawwks and i finished woodworkign and mamal study merit badge. I cant wait to eat one of your meals Mom!”

Thomas: “Today I fist bumnped with a polar bear. It was chill. And I shot a black powder shot gun, and it was also chill. Hey Annie and Dottie, I missed you babeskies!  And you to mommy!”

Philip: “I shot clay pidgeons with the shotgun and I got a 38 with a 22 rifle. and I love you MOm and dad!”

Peter: “I finished all four merit badges. I cant wait to get home. I was gogn to write a letter but we lost the envelope. I can’t wit to see you!”

District Camporee 2010

District Camporee

Panthers Patrol

Patrol Leader- Sam

Flaming Arrows Patrol

Patrol Leader- Ben

This patrol did a good job getting their stuff done.

Several of the boy’s earned their scout rank and all helped put together a patrol flag and yell. They woke up and made eggs and grilled cheese for breakfast, and made a useful tripod gadget.

Cobras Patrol

Patrol Leader- Eric

Everyone from the Cobras did a great job in the field events and won 1st place in the orienteering coarse. They also came up with a good patrol flag and yell, and made some awesome pancakes and burgers that fed their patrol well.

Lightning’s Patrol

Patrol Leader- Thomas

The Lightning’s worked very hard at camporee. They built the wash station, the camp entrance, and made an ax yard. They achieved 1st place for the troop spirit award and cooked homemade donuts.

SR2 Base Camp 2010

Sunday June 20
We arrived at Sid Richardson Scout Ranch at 11:30am in time to wait until 1:00pm when they allowed us to check in.

After we checked in those who needed to their swim tests.  All those that had time passed their swim test as strong swimmers (blue beads).  Only two adults and one scout still need to find time to test.
It is very hot here so we have all scouts drinking plenty of water.  Tres Todd found out the hard way and had to go to first aid, where they cooled him off and checked him out and sent him on his way.
Next we went to the campsite and set up everything.  Cole Tagte and I, Jacob Earwood (according to Mr. Kubricht) are doing a fine job as SPL and ASPL for base camp and Travis Phillips is managing Quartermaster. After that the high adventure scouts left for their boat.   The Chisholm trail group met at their dock and boarded a pontoon party boat and left for their high adventure trek.  I guess we will see them Friday.
The rest of the scouts at base camp went and got all the safety and cleaning equipment like fire cans, brooms, and a bulletin board.  Next we went to dinner where we ate chicken fried mystery meat, mashed potatoes, corn and desert.
After dinner we went back to camp and set up the monster tent. We then proceeded to the opening campfire shortly after. We were introduced to the staff and watched some skits and were sent back to camp. Mr. Walker is passing out our merit badge schedules  and we will be going to bed shortly.
Everyone seems to be having fun.

Troop Historian

Monday June 21

2nd Day
Everyone woke up by 6:15am.  We all got dressed quickly and headed towards the flagpole for the morning ceremony which starts every morning at 7:00am, where all troops gathered to say grace and post the flags.  We then went into the mess hall where we ate french toast and bacon.
The Cobra patrol was very impressing because Creed Dotson and Travis Mize had maps of the whole base camp and and were telling all the other scouts where they needed to go.
After settling down to a good Breakfast, it was time to start merit badges at 8:00am.  So we all departed and everyone found their merit badge classes ok.
Soon enough it was time for lunch where we all ate in the mess hall.  We had corn dogs for lunch with some of us eating a salad.  We departed again and went back to working on merit badges until 5:00pm, where we then went back to camp to get ready for Dinner, a Pathfinding merit badge, and the Blob.
Everyone was very hungry from all the hard work we did today.  We feasted on roast beef sandwiches and drank lots of water and some bug juice  (as the staff called it).
The troop then just hung around until it was time for the Pathfinding merit badge which was also located in the mess hall.  It is a merit badge that was available to take many many years and was taken out of the BSA merit badge program for a long time but they brought it back for this year only 2010.  You can’t take it any other year so we all decided to take it this year, it only requires 1 hour to complete.
We finished the merit badge and then headed down to the Blob which is a giant balloon you jump on to launch other people into the water.  Everyone had lots of fun.
We don’t have any contact with the Chisholm trail crew but this is what we do know.
They should have started out with orientation and then went into the water this afternoon for tubing and wake boarding. This evening they should be doing covert ops.
Everyone so far seems to be holding up pretty well.

Troop Historian

June 22, 2010

3rd Day
We awoke early again and proceeded towards the flagpole, said grace

and then went into the dinning hall to a biscuit and gravy breakfast. We are getting into a daily routine for getting up and going to breakfast. Next everyone went to their merit badge classes and are getting hands on in their sessions now.  That is making the classes easier and more fun.

For lunch we ate hamburgers with chips and cookies.
After merit badge classes were over for the day we headed down for Dinner to some Turkey with dressing and pudding.
After Dinner the boys taking the rifle merit badge including myself headed down to the rifle range to work on some of the shooting requirements.
Afterward all of us headed down to camp and we had to take care of some spider issues. We swept out the tents, made sure the scouts had tarps down and made sure the scouts knew how to stow their gear so spiders would not get in to their stuff. It was not a real big deal and no one was bitten. This seems to be helping the scouts with their feeling towards the spiders. We will see how well it works tonight. That did not take very long.
We had two leaders, Tom Rike and Jerry Kubricht and one scout visit the medic due to the heat.  The Doctor said they should drink more water, try to stay cool and they were OKed to go on.
We had already signed up to clean the scout showers so we went and did this next. Cleaning the showers only took about 20 minutes because most of the boys were working quickly and being very helpful.
Just after we got back from cleaning the showers the Chisholm trail boys dropped in on us at about 9:00pm. This was a total surprise and they were wearing clothes from the civil war.  They said they were having a good time and that they liked doing Cavalry because they got to shoot off a cannon and some black powder guns and that they did not like Covert Ops very well.
We will keep you updated

Troop Historian

June 23, 2010

4th Day
We woke up today to our usual routine except we had eggs and potatoes this time.
Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves at camp and we are are starting to work together as a group more and more each day. In fact, we have started the Wrangler award which is only awarded here at Sid Richardson and consist of things like; cleaning the latrines, building an entrance to our campsite, doing a service project that consist of at least one hour of work, etc. The boys know that they are highly capable of getting this award if everyone works hard and works together.
Lunch: For lunch we had meat and cheese nachos which all the boys seemed to like very well. They always have the salad bar open if you don’t get full enough. They need to have more variety on drinks because we have been drinking nothing but bug juice for the last 4 days. I’m getting sick from that stuff.
Most boys are getting close to if not already finished with some of their merit badges. This hopefully will allow for more time to work on our Wrangler award.
Dinner: For Dinner we had Salisbury steak with mashed potatoes which were not that bad actually. Oh no more bug Juice.
After Dinner was over all of us except Matthew Waskim headed down to the blob for our last time. But this time we got a lot more time at the blob. Most all the boys really enjoyed blobbing. Matthew Waskim stayed at the Dinning Hall where he played Dungeons and Dragons with three friends he made.
We drove back after the blob and most everyone went back to camp except for Creed Dodson and I. We stayed and played a few games of dodge ball with another troop. We won all the games except for one. The other Troop barely won because I got out early.
We then walked back to camp and had a troop campfire which was a requirement for the Wrangler award and the campfire consist of skits, story, and songs.
Chisholm Trail Group should be doing area 51 tonight and tomorrow which is a paintball course that is suppose to be a whole lot of fun.
Good Night And God Bless
Jacob Earwood,
Troop Historian
June 24
5th Day

By now most scouts are finished with their merit badges and things are starting to slowly wind down.  We are finishing up the Wrangler award and plan on receiving it tomorrow. The  initial plan was to do a service project that consist of moving rocks to help fill in some holes, but unfortunately the weather kicked in mid-afternoon today and it was raining with thunder and lightning.  It didn’t rain very much as it was still dusty afterwards.  So we ended up not doing a service project but we can still get the award.

In short here is what we had for our meals today.
Breakfast: Pancakes and breakfast sausage.
Lunch: Hotdogs with cookies and chips.
Dinner: Mystery meat on a bun, Bug Juice, beans, and cake
After Dinner the Cobras cleaned the Dinning hall restroom, while the Panthers and the Lightnings walked to the Gazebo which are both requirements for the Wrangler award. Then tomorrow we will switch jobs because all Patrols have to do both.
Some scouts decided since they finished some of their other merit badges that they would join another one to fill its spot.  However the counselors did not guarantee they would finish them.  I joined Metalworking and I think I can finish it here.
Next after the gazebo most scouts went to the fingerprinting merit badge which was offered at the last minute and only took an hour to get and some of them went to branding.  They enjoyed watching the branding and some of them got their mugs branded.

Day 6th
Coming home tomorrow and everyone is ready.  We awoke fairly early this morning since we needed to get prepared for our last day in camp.  Instead of going to the flag ceremony this morning we decided to have our own in camp because it was a requirement to get the Wrangler award.  We cleaned the latrines today to finish up our Wrangler award.  All scouts are going to be awarded this patch tomorrow morning for their hard work.
Dinning Hall Food Schedule
Breakfast: Breakfast tacos
Lunch: Sub Sandwiches
Dinner: Brisket with potato salad and beans
Note: For Lunch and Dinner we had bug juice again.
We went to the closing campfire and performed a skit.  Mrs. Kjolin also performed a skit with the Wilderness First Aid class.  While we were at the closing campfire Zack Rike and Nick Cargo qualified for their rifle merit badge, which was really hard to get, and most scouts did not qualify.
We will be leaving tomorrow as soon as possible but it will be at least 1:00pm before we can leave because we will be waiting on the Chisholm Trail Group to return.
Thanks for reading the scout camp news this week and the boys and I all look forward to seeing y’all tomorrow.
Jacob Earwood,
Troop Historian
As a closing remark I’d like to say it has been my pleasure to fill in for Scoutmaster for the boys in Base Camp this week.  Jacob and Cole have both made my job as easy as it could possibly have been by keeping all the boys working and having fun.  The scouts themselves have been very well behaved and have  drawn complements from other Troop leaders for their good behavior.  I’d also like to say the other leaders have given me all the support I could hope for.  It would have been very hard this week with out them. Thank You All for trusting me with your boys.  I have enjoyed working with everyone this week.

Jerry Kubricht

Lake Bryan-2010

Lake Bryan Campout

Panthers Patrol

Patrol Leader- Sam

This was the first campout since the Panther Patrol officially got organized and they pulled it off very well together. Most of the boys from our patrol got qualified for the white water kayaking trip. We also worked on our forward, backward, and side stokes as well as helping get the campfire going and eating summer sausage and cheese for lunch after a long morning of working hard in the canoes and kayaks.

For breakfast on Sunday we made some great pigs in a blanket in a dutch oven with cheese on top.

Flaming Arrows Patrol

Patrol Leader- Jack

The flaming arrows worked very hard on their canoeing skills to get ready for their first canoeing trip. They made some very tasty hamburgers on a propane stove which made them a better cook. The flaming arrows also worked together very well in organizing cooking and they always were one of the first patrols to start cooking.

Cobras Patrol

Patrol Leader- Eric

The Cobra’s patrol got a lot accomplished. They succeeded in their canoeing skills and preformed well on the water. They made awesome chicken and rice and set up their tent without any help. The cobra’s did just about everything right and preformed well as one.

Lightning’s Patrol

Patrol Leader- Thomas

The lightning’s patrol qualified for their white water kayaking trip. They ate sausage for lunch and helped with the campfire by gather kindling and organizing it together. They ate sausage for lunch and threw the football around in their spare time. Some of the boys also got requirement completed.

Chism Trail-2010

Troop 383- Jake Blazak- Acting Historian

Sunday June 20th

When we got to Sid Richardson Scout Ranch, we had to wait to check in and some people played football during the wait. After, we got checked in those who had not token the swim text took it. Then base camp got set up and the Chism Trail group went to set up there camp. When we got our tents, set up we ate burgers and hot dogs with beans and potato salad. After, dinner we went to a kind of opening ceremony showing all of the different events they had by having the staff show off their events. For the rest of the day we just stayed in camp.

Monday June 21st

Our first morning we woke up and went to breakfast to eat danishes, nutrigrain bars, and cereal. We were given a tote bucket with our lunches in it for the next three days. Then we sent Mr. West to training for driving the boat. When Mr. West came back with the boat we drove to the marina to go tubing our first water sport. After, tubing we went back to our camp and went to covert ops at the same area as we stayed the night before. We ate MREs for dinner. We had to wait for it to get dark for us to do our event. When it got dark, we started covert ops. We got our gear that was two night vision goggles, a gps, and a two-way radio. We had to find a black box that shot out of our pilot’s helicopter with the coordinates of our pilot in it. We brought that box back to base and then we had to find two payloads. A lot of us got spear grass and cactus needles in our feet and scratches on our legs from running around. We all got back to camp around 12 o’clock.

Tuesday June 22nd

We woke up and took down camp. We had oatmeal for breakfast. We took our gear to Calvary our next event, so that our gear wouldn’t get wet on the boat. For our water sport, we went sailing but not for long because we decided sailing would not be fun to do for a whole four hours. We sailed a while and went swimming for the remainder of the time we had until we had to go to Calvary. At Calvary for dinner, they gave us chili and peaches. The staff split us up into two groups because they need some people in infantry and some in artillery. Both the infantry and artillery drilled and learned how to use the guns. After we were done with that we all decided to go down to base camp to say hey to the base campers and also go to the trading post. We slept on the grass that night with a canvas tent over our heads all except for our scoutmaster who decided it was more comfortable on a table.

Wednesday June 23rd

The staff said we were supposed to wake up at seven but we did not eat breakfast that early because the staff did not wake up at seven. We had eggs and bacon for breakfast. We left Calvary and took our gear to Area 51. We set up camp at Area 51. We then went to go to dinner. We cooked ourselves a silver turtle which is a hamburger patty with onions, potatoes, carrot, cabbage, and cucumbers. You wrap all of those ingredients in foil and set it on coals. After, dinner the staff took us to a trailer where we geared up with paintball guns. We walked through a course in a line shooting at lit up targets. We were the first group so we could go to sleep early.

Thursday June 24th

In the morning, we had green pancakes that the staff mixed and we flipped over coals. We dropped our stuff off at highland games. We had wind surfing scheduled as a water sport but since there was no wind we just reported to the sailing base and went off to go swim. We found a nice place where there were rocks to jump off into the water. First, we checked how deep it was where we were jumping. We went to highland games to go set up our camp but it started raining and every ones tents got wet except for the adults and Blaine, Michael, and Tres’s tent because they were not setting up there tent when it started raining and they got a tarp over their gear. Since it was raining, we could not practice for the highland games because it would be dangerous to throw heavy stuff while it was slippery so the staff just explained what we were supposed to do in the morning. We just sat around, talked, and played the guitar until we decided to go to sleep.

Friday June 25th

At highland games, they gave us oatmeal and nutrigrain bars for breakfast. We competed in the highland games and also ate lunch there out of our tote basket which we usually had things like crackers, summer sausage, tuna, cheese, and cookies. We dropped off our gear at the Viking outpost. We went to the blob for our watersport. Then we went to the Viking outpost where we battled with padded swords and shields. We had a great dinner of ham, steak, some kind of stew, and something made with turnips. We learned about the history of the Vikings from the staff. We slept for our last night at Sid Richardson Scout Ranch.

Saturday June 26th

In the morning, we saw horses that the staff told us about the day before. For breakfast, we had a ham and cheese gruel and apple gruel. We sailed and rowed on an authentic Viking ship. After the ride on the Viking ship, we had an epic battle. We left the Viking outpost to go and pack all of our things off the boat and onto the trucks to leave and go home.

Guadalupe River State Park-2010

Campout report – By Jacob Earwood – Troop Historian

Guadalupe State Park

Panthers Patrol

Patrol Leader- Sam

The Panthers Patrol worked well together even though their Patrol ran small this campout. They had Turkey sandwiches for lunch and then went fishing afterwords where Zack caught a fish. For Dinner they cooked some fantastic enchiladas. Some Patrol members even got requirements sighed off. They also had bagels for the next Morning’s breakfast.

Flaming Arrows Patrol

Patrol Leader- Jack

Almost everyone got their canoeing merit badge, unless they already had it. They cooperated good together and performed as one. For breakfast they ate cereal. And they also all swam in the river, where they played games. A boy or two even got a requirement signed off.

Cobras Patrol

Patrol Leader- Eric

They got their requirement for taking care of tools signed off and everyone finished their canoeing merit badge. The Patrol feasted on Hotdogs for Saturday Lunch and Fajitas for Saturday Dinner. Several boys achieved rank advancement while also staying active in helping out with the Patrol. Oatmeal was eaten for Sunday Breakfast before heading back.

Lightning’s Patrol

Patrol Leader- Thomas

The lightning’s Patrol was one of the most well rounded Patrols at the campout. They had a little bit of everything including requirements signed off, participating in all the activities they could, helped the little scouts in getting rank and with setup. They cooked an awesome dessert called shepherds pot, which they enjoyed and scarcely spared.
